This is me evangelising for bringing curiosity, empathy and humility to business development efforts in law firms.
We can talk at approx 225 words per minute but can listen at approx 500 words per minute which means we are all less inclined to listen properly and we can’t wait to respond and talk!

When it comes to effective BD though, I think that building a habit to listen without judgment and resisting the urge to talk about yourself / the firm first is the best of way of building trust.

In my experience, from there, the conversation flows and how you can work together becomes clearer quite naturally.

I approach all my BD as enjoyable conversations and an opportunity to learn about others. I always reflect on how well I did or didn’t listen too.
