Looking for some holiday reading? Here are three recommendations – all very easy reading and thought provoking for very different reasons:
1) In the Moment by Neil Mullarkey. This is packed full of practical suggestions if you are a leader who needs to improve your listening skills in a hybrid world, who needs to improve relationships and dynamics in your lead team, who has to handle yourself in difficult situation and wants to improve your influence and impact. Neil’s tenure in the world of comedy and improvisation is incredibly valuable to help you remove assumptions about others and be prepared for anything. If you want to make others look good and get off auto-pilot to make a bigger impact, this ones for you.

2) Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. I heard about this in a Simon Sinek podcast and although it’s about a restauranteur, it piqued my interest. His ambition to create the greatest restaurant in the world is so almost obnoxiously courageous, it is inspiring. The practical initiatives he puts in place, the knock-backs, the storytelling and the growth mindset are gripping. He says ‘success comes in cans and failures come in cant’s’. I could not put this book down and bought it for a client who leads a law firm and loved it too. So many ideas for client service businesses!

3) From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks – This one a client bought for me and it made me properly stop and think. This is for all of us who are ‘strivers’ in life and work. You’ll be stimulated with some great concepts here if you find prioritisation of your energy between work and life difficult, if you struggle to appreciate your achievements, want to be recognised for your credentials and want longevity in your career and life impact. I appreciate the notion in this book that we focus too much time worrying about what others think. It also brings home how we all have immense capability that changes as we grow through our careers, so that we should all be able to build a life that gets better with age.

Whatever you’re doing this summer, I hope you have the chance to recharge and appreciate what’s important to you in the present. Please do share your recommendations too!
