Feeling the enjoyable stretch today running a hybrid workshop for a client! Wanted to share my seven top tips… as hybrid presents different challenges to having everyone online or everyone in the room.
We had two meeting rooms on either side of the Atlantic plus a number of people joining remotely, and needed to facilitate a session helping them to explore how to build capabilities whilst under stretch (hence the resistance bands)…
Some thoughts based on our experience today and previously at Courageous Co.:
– Make sure that presenters are split across the different sites so that one site isn’t just in passive receive mode for the session
– Get everyone to introduce themselves at the start so people know who is in each room – we like to “pass the baton”
– Make sure that any breakout groups are mixed across the different sites – much more difficult logistically (need multiple devices logged in) but breaks down geographic barriers and builds connection
– Make sure everyone has access to the same tools if using physical workbooks / props – and have back-ups for people that end up joining remotely (pdfs to send in the chat, household items they can use instead of resistance bands, etc)
– Expect that the logistics will change and figure out how to flex ahead of time! Having a second facilitator/ support person to run/rework the Zoom breakouts, monitor the chat, etc allows you to focus on getting the best from the group discussion.
– Use a second platform (e.g. Mentimeter) to share instructions so people can see them when in the breakout groups – as the main slides won’t be visible. Plus use Mentimeter to get quick feedback up on screen from all the participants…
– Turn up early so there is time to debug all the AV/connectivity issues before starting! Much earlier than you think you need to!
And most importantly: SMILE! It’s always a privilege to help teams move forwards in pursuit of their stretching goals…
